To You, Whom My Heart Has Always Been Finding
For Shane Kahlevi, on our fourth month together.
My dearest Shane,
I sometimes wonder how a life can change so quietly. There was no great announcement from the heavens when you first entered mine. The earth did not tremble beneath its own astonishment. The stars did not rearrange themselves into a prophecy I could understand. There was only the beginning of something I had not yet learned to name. A small and seemingly ordinary moment that would eventually become the doorway to everything I now hold dear.
Before you, I had grown accustomed to the world as it was. I knew the familiar rhythm of passing days and the strange loneliness that can sometimes hide beneath an otherwise peaceful life. I had learned to carry my own thoughts like a house carries its shadows. Then you appeared. And somehow the rooms within me began to discover windows they had never known existed.
At first, you were simply someone I wanted to know. Then you became a thought that returned without invitation. Your name began to settle into the quiet corners of my days. I found myself looking forward to the smallest fragments of you. A word. A story. A glimpse of the person you were becoming before my eyes. I did not understand then that love was already planting its roots beneath the surface of my ordinary world.
Perhaps that is what makes our beginning so beautiful to me. Nothing demanded that I fall in love with you. No invisible hand forced my heart into surrender. I simply continued discovering you until the act of knowing you became indistinguishable from the act of loving you.
There is something remarkable about the way a person can become important without asking for permission. You did not arrive carrying a promise to change my life. You were simply yourself. Yet your existence began to alter the meaning of things I had once considered insignificant. The hours became less empty. The future became less frightening. Even silence acquired a different shape because somewhere within it lived the possibility of you.
And then came the first of July.
I wish I could fold that day into a piece of paper and keep it forever between the pages of my favorite book. I would preserve it like a pressed flower whose colors refuse to disappear with time. Not because everything suddenly became perfect but because something precious had finally been given a name. There was an us. Two separate stories had begun writing themselves upon the same page.
I have carried that beginning with me ever since.
Four months have passed now. Four chapters of a story that still feels astonishingly new. I have watched affection grow into tenderness and tenderness become something far more enduring. I have learned that love does not always announce itself through extraordinary gestures. Sometimes it reveals itself through the simplest desire to remain. To listen. To understand. To keep choosing the same person after the first excitement has settled into something gentler.
And I choose you, Shane.
I choose you in the sweetness of our happiest conversations. I choose you in the hours when words seem difficult to find. I choose you when the world feels generous and when it becomes an unfamiliar country filled with storms. I do not love you only for the beautiful things you bring into my life. I love you because you are a whole universe of your own. There are constellations within you that I have yet to discover and I want to spend my days learning the names of every one.
I know that neither of us is made entirely of sunlight. We have our uncertainties. We have our quiet fears and the little wounds that life leaves beneath the skin. There may be days when we misunderstand one another or struggle to find the language that tenderness requires. But I do not want a love that exists only when the sky is clear. I want to learn the weather of your heart in every season. I want to be someone who stays gentle when the rain arrives.
If your world ever grows unbearably heavy, I hope my love can become a small place where you are allowed to rest. Not a shelter that asks you to forget your storms. Not a light that demands you stop being afraid. Simply a place where you never have to pretend that the weight of living is lighter than it truly is.
You have made me understand that home is not always an address. Sometimes home is the feeling of being understood without having to translate every hidden part of yourself. Sometimes it is a familiar name arriving in the middle of an exhausting day. Sometimes it is the extraordinary peace of knowing that another heart has made room for yours.
And if I have found anything resembling home in this enormous world, it is in the tenderness I feel when I think of you.
I cannot promise that every tomorrow will be easy. Time is an unpredictable author and life has never been particularly obedient to our wishes. But I can promise to keep learning how to love you with greater patience. I want to become more careful with your heart as the years teach me what devotion truly means. I want our story to be something we continue writing with kindness even when the pages become difficult.
There is so much of you I have yet to know. So many thoughts you have not spoken. So many dreams waiting to be born. So many versions of ourselves that have not yet stepped into the world. And I find comfort in the thought that love does not require me to know everything about you today. It asks only that I remain willing to discover you tomorrow.
Sometimes I imagine our future as a garden. Not every flower will bloom in the same season. Some will need patience. Others will grow unexpectedly between the stones. There will be rain and there will be mornings when the earth seems to have forgotten how to be kind. Still, I want to tend that garden with you. I want us to create something that survives because we never stop caring for it.
Perhaps one day we will look back at these first four months and smile at how young our story once was. Perhaps we will remember the little things that seemed enormous to us. The words we treasured. The moments we wished could last longer. The ways our hearts learned to recognize one another.
I hope that when such a day arrives, we will still be able to see the beauty of this beginning.
Shane, if I could return to the moment before I knew you, I would not reveal what was waiting ahead. I would let myself discover you all over again. I would allow every small curiosity to grow into affection. I would welcome every uncertain heartbeat and every unexpected tenderness. Because loving you has been one of the loveliest ways I have ever learned that life can surprise me.
And perhaps that is the greatest gift these four months have given me. Not the certainty that I understand love completely. Not the illusion that I can predict the shape of forever. But the quiet knowledge that amid all the possible stories my life could have become, I am grateful that yours found its way into mine.
Happy Fourth Monthversary, my love.
Four months are only a handful of pages in the great book of time. Yet you have already written yourself into parts of me that I never knew were waiting for a story. And if the universe grants us another page tomorrow, I hope we will fill it with tenderness. If it grants us a thousand more, I hope we will never forget how beautiful it was to begin.
There are still countless things I wish to tell you. More than one letter could ever contain. More than any anniversary could ever commemorate. So I will not pretend these words are enough to explain what you mean to me.
Let them be only a beginning.
Because if love is a story that must be written again each morning, then there is one name I would gladly place upon its pages for as long as my heart remembers how to speak.
